15. Fasten off

When you have completed the final stitch, patterns often instruct you to "fasten off, leaving a long tail." A long yarn tail is typically around 6 inches in length or equivalent to the edge of the piece if you plan to sew it onto another item. Fastening off secures and holds the piece together.

1. Complete the last stitch and then cut the yarn, leaving a tail that is at least 6 inches longer than the circumference of the edge of the piece.

2. Cut the yarn at least 6 inches away from the point where it intersects with the project.

3. Continue pulling the yarn completely through the loop until a knot forms. If you have finished crocheting a flat piece, it is recommended to weave in the yarn tails.
